Padre Pio, also known as Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, is one of the most beloved and charismatic figures in the history of the Catholic Church.
Born Francesco Forgione on May 25, 1887 in Pietrelcina, a small town in Campania, Italy, his life was marked by spiritual phenomena, suffering and intense dedication to faith.
From his youth, Francis showed a profound religiosity. At just five years old, he already dedicated time to prayer and spiritual life. He said he had had celestial visions and mystical encounters with Jesus, the Virgin Mary and angels. At sixteen he entered the novitiate of the Capuchin Friars Minor in Morcone, and on 22 January 1903 he took the name Fra Pio. He was ordained a priest in 1910.
The most well-known and mysterious phenomenon in Padre Pio's life were the stigmata. On 20 September 1918, while praying before a crucifix in the chapel of San Giovanni Rotondo, he received the stigmata; wounds at the same points as Christ's wounds on the cross. These wounds bled for 50 years until his death, never becoming infected or healing.
Ministry and miracles
Padre Pio spent most of his life in San Giovanni Rotondo, where his reputation for holiness grew rapidly, attracting faithful from all over the world. He was known for his ability to read people's souls during confession, for his gift of bilocation (being present in two places at the same time), and for his healing powers. Many faithful reported miraculous healings attributed to his intercession.
Despite his growing popularity, Padre Pio's life was not without challenges. The Church, initially skeptical about his mystical phenomena and the growing media attention, subjected him to numerous investigations and for some periods he was even forbidden to publicly exercise his priestly ministry.
Canonization
In the last years of his life, Padre Pio saw the realization of one of his great dreams: the construction of a hospital in San Giovanni Rotondo, the "Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza", inaugurated in 1956. He died on 23 September 1968. His death it was followed by an enormous display of devotion.
The canonization process began immediately after his death. He was beatified in 1999 by Pope John Paul II and proclaimed a saint on 16 June 2002.
The figure of Padre Pio remains one of the most fascinating and loved in the Catholic Church, a symbol of faith, hope and charity for millions of devotees around the world.
