The cylindrical tower, located west of the historic center near one of the ancient gates of the castrum, is an imposing structure that dominates the skyline. Its distinctive shape, with a massive base that narrows towards the top, suggests a robust and defensive construction. The lower part of the tower shows signs of subsequent alterations, with walls added at different times to adapt the tower to new purposes.
Despite the changes, some original elements clearly emerge. The stone masonry, typical of medieval buildings, is well preserved in the upper part of the tower. The architectural features, such as the corbels and narrow arched windows, reveal an elegant simplicity that fits in with the Norman-Swabian style. In the past, this tower played a crucial role in the defense and control of access to the city, bearing witness to the turbulent historical events of our territory.
The quadrangular tower, positioned on the east side of the town, represents a precious example of medieval architecture. Privately owned, this tower presents itself as a solid stone bulwark that rises majestically above the surrounding landscape. Recently restored and transformed into a hostel, the tower has taken on a new role in welcoming pilgrims along the Via Francigena: it offers a welcoming and historic refuge for those making the journey to sacred places.
Its walls, composed of carefully crafted stone blocks, reflect the skill of the craftsmen of the Norman-Swabian era. The structure shows signs of restoration which have contributed to preserving its integrity, allowing its original beauty to still be admired today. Narrowly framed windows and battlements along the roof edge highlight the defensive function of this tower, which once watched over the city and surrounding activities.
Both of these towers represent not only historical monuments, but living testimonies of a bygone era, when our city was at the center of historical events and social transformations. They enchant and inspire, telling stories of courage, ingenuity and resilience that are an integral part of our urban identity.
